There are various types of security measures that can be applied to any type of document. The following levels of protection may be used alone or in combination with each other: Counterfeit and Copy Deterrence provides protection from duplication where a copy might be used or redeemed illicitly as an original. Copy Control Protection is used when a copy of a document, such as a college transcript, is authorized, yet needs to be easily recognized as a duplicate of the original. Forgery and Tamper Prevention — when an original document is in danger of being altered to change its value or intended user/owner, this level of protection is most effective. Authentication provides for verification and easy identification of a document as an original. Applying the Technology Becoming familiar with types of forgery and knowing how to apply anti-counterfeiting technology is important. At Ren-Form we are known in the industry as experts in not only ballot printing but various bank security printing too. There are several techniques that are commonly used in security printing. Original artwork cannot be downloaded from the Internet. Fine line borders and guilloche (bank note quality) designs are also helpful. The use of VOID Pantograph technology is effective in distorting original artwork, because it makes it unable to be adequately copied. Developed in the 1980s, VOID Pantograph technology reveals the hidden-image background messages, VOID, COPY or UNAUTHORIZED COPY, when a person copies the document. With improvements in color copier and scanning resolutions, traditional tell tales signs have become much less effective. Today’s technology is by far the best and can simulate even the best of litho printing and it is very effective in forgery as we know it. The technology starts with the paper itself. There’s no security in standard 80gsm. offset (paper). Substrates and base papers are available for authentication purposes, as well as to protect against forgery and tampering with variable information on the document—signatures, date issued, name, birth date or value. These features can include watermarks (artificial and custom Fourdinier), visible and invisible fibers, chemical sensitivity to bleaches and solvents, and other additives that fuse toner to the paper in non-impact printing. Various specialty inks are available for security printing. Ultraviolets (invisible) appear when exposed to a UV light source. Thermochromic ink will either disappear or change color, for example purple ink can turn pink when rubbed. Coin-reactive inks are invisible to the eye, but turn black when scratched with a coin. Erasable inks in the background image will rub off if an attempt to change variable text on the document. Most commercial security printing is done on offset presses, but the more sophisticated security products may require prismatic (split fountain) or intaglio printing. Many of the security techniques can also be accomplished through flexographic and screen printing. Finishing techniques further protect the document or other printed asset—sequential numbering, bar-coding, foil stamping, embossing or holograms. Protecting Your Company There are overt security features, which are obvious features such as a warning band on a document. On the other hand, covert security features require forensics to detect them, for example a black light to examine fluorescent fibers in certain papers. Once a document is printed with any combination of security features, the job still remains incomplete. All too often companies tend to neglect the importance of protecting the issuance of the check, birth record, gift certificate or other important document. This is when fraud and forgery can come into play. Without proper signing and certification procedures and equipment, these crimes are easily perpetrated. Holograms Holograms continue to be effective as integrated security devices in documents, labels and packaging. They have particular value in preventing digital counterfeiting, 'digifeiting', and color copying. Economic losses attributed to counterfeiting are estimated at $200-$250 billion per year in the US alone. Worldwide losses may well run to $1 trillion. These losses do not include damage to brand name reputation, injury to legitimate retail markets, and compromising public health and security The advantages of holograms are that they improve a document’s image and are still viable security features, although they aren’t as secure as they used to be. The VOID Pantograph option is cheaper, and you can also do serialization of a document itself, which is an imprinted number or bleed through if migrating ink where you can see the number reversed on back of the document. Since the early 1980s, when hologram technology progressed to foil stamping machines, the use for holograms has become more wide spread. The hologram is used for security tags, packaging, book covers, and advertising.
